Double-cab pickup is a pickup body configuration where the passenger cabin is extended to include two full seating rows, usually with four doors, while still retaining an open rear cargo bed.

Technically, it sits between a passenger vehicle and a light commercial vehicle.

Cabin structure

A double-cab has:

Front row: driver + front passenger
Rear row: usually 3 passengers
Doors: normally 4 proper full-size doors
Seating: usually 5 seats total
Cargo bed: shorter than a single-cab because more chassis length is used for the cabin

So the vehicle’s overall length may be similar to other pickup variants, but the wheelbase space is shared differently between cabin and load bed.

Chassis and body layout

Most proper double-cab pickups use a body-on-frame chassis.

That means the cabin and cargo bed are mounted on a strong ladder-frame structure, rather than being one single car-like body.

This is why trucks like the Hilux, Ranger, D-Max, Triton, Navara, and Defender pickup conversions can handle heavier loads, towing, rough roads, and off-road stress better than normal cars.

The frame carries the load.
The cabin is mounted onto it.
The bed is also mounted separately behind it.

Weight distribution

Because a double-cab has a larger passenger cabin, more weight is placed towards the middle/front of the vehicle compared with a single-cab.

This affects:

Payload: usually lower than single-cab
Rear bed length: shorter
Ride comfort: usually better when carrying passengers
Handling: more balanced than a very light rear single-cab
Off-road breakover angle: can be affected depending on wheelbase

A single-cab is more work-focused.
A double-cab is more mixed-use: people + cargo.

Suspension setup

Many double-cab pickups still use:

Front: independent suspension
Rear: leaf springs or coil springs, depending on model

Leaf springs are common because they can carry heavier loads. But they can feel bouncy when the truck is empty.

Some trucks use coil springs at the rear for more comfort, but leaf springs are still common in work-oriented pickups.

Payload and towing

Double-cabs are usually rated for both passenger use and load carrying.

Typical double-cab pickups may carry around 700 kg to over 1,000 kg payload, depending on model, market, suspension, and specification.

They can also tow, often around 2,500 kg to 3,500 kg for many modern diesel pickups, again depending on model and rating.

But once you carry 5 passengers, your remaining payload reduces. Payload is not just cargo in the bed. It includes passengers, accessories, canopy, roof rack, tools, fuel, and luggage.

4x4 drivetrain

Many double-cabs come in 4x2 or 4x4 versions.

A proper 4x4 double-cab may have:

High range 2WD
High range 4WD
Low range 4WD
Rear differential lock
Hill descent control
Traction control
Underbody protection

That makes it useful for off-road, plantation roads, construction sites, camping, towing, and overlanding.

In simple technical terms

A double-cab pickup is a body-on-frame light truck with a four-door passenger cabin, two seating rows, and a rear cargo bed, designed to balance passenger carrying, cargo loading, towing, and off-road ability.
