1-cylinder engine
Very simple engine with one piston. Not used in normal cars because it vibrates a lot and makes limited power.
Example: small motorbikes, generators, lawn machines.

2-cylinder engine
Small and light, better than single-cylinder but still not very smooth for bigger cars.
Examples: Fiat 500 TwinAir, Citroen 2CV, some small Kei cars and motorbikes.

3-cylinder engine
Common in modern small cars. Good fuel economy, compact size, but can feel a bit rough compared to 4-cylinder.
Examples: Perodua Axia 1.0, Toyota GR Yaris 1.6 turbo, Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost.

4-cylinder engine
Most common engine type. Good balance between power, fuel use, size, and maintenance. Many diesel trucks and 4x4s also use 4-cylinder engines.
Examples: Toyota Hilux 2.4/2.8 diesel, Ford Ranger 2.2/2.0, Land Rover Defender 300Tdi, Honda Civic 1.5/2.0, Toyota Camry 2.5.

5-cylinder engine
Unusual but loved for its sound and character. Smoother than a 4-cylinder, not as common as 6-cylinder.
Examples: Audi Quattro 5-cylinder, Audi RS3 2.5 turbo, Volvo 850 T5, Volvo V70, Ford Ranger 3.2 diesel.

6-cylinder engine
Very smooth and stronger. Can be inline-6, V6, or flat-6. Common in bigger SUVs, luxury cars, and performance cars.
Examples: Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series 1HD diesel inline-6, Nissan Patrol 4.2 diesel, BMW 3 Series/5 Series inline-6, Toyota Supra 2JZ inline-6, Ford Ranger/Raptor 3.0 V6, Porsche 911 flat-6.

8-cylinder engine
Usually V8. Big power, strong torque, nice sound. Common in muscle cars, big SUVs, pickups, and luxury cars.
Examples: Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Series 4.7 V8, Lexus LX570 5.7 V8, Ford Mustang GT 5.0 V8, Range Rover V8, Chevrolet Silverado V8.

10-cylinder engine
Usually V10. Rare, mostly performance cars and some big trucks/SUVs. High power, unique sound, but thirsty.
Examples: Lamborghini Gallardo V10, Audi R8 V10, Dodge Viper V10, Ford Excursion V10.

12-cylinder engine
Usually V12. Very smooth, powerful, expensive to maintain. Mostly luxury cars and supercars.
Examples: Toyota Century V12, Mercedes S600 V12, BMW 760Li V12, Ferrari 812 V12, Lamborghini Aventador V12.

16-cylinder engine
Very rare. Mostly hypercars or old exotic luxury cars. Huge power, very complex.
Examples: Bugatti Veyron W16, Bugatti Chiron W16, Cadillac V16 classic cars.

Simple way to remember:

3-cylinder = small economy car
4-cylinder = most normal cars and many 4x4s
5-cylinder = rare, character engine
6-cylinder = smooth and strong
8-cylinder = big power and torque
10/12/16-cylinder = exotic, expensive, thirsty stuff
