A diff lock, or differential lock, is a mechanism that forces both wheels on an axle to rotate at the same speed, regardless of traction. This is in contrast to a standard differential, which allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds, making it easier to turn corners.

Why is it useful?

  • Traction: When one wheel loses traction (e.g., spinning in mud or air), a diff lock ensures that the other wheel continues to receive power, helping the vehicle to move forward.  
  • Off-roading: Diff locks are especially valuable in off-road situations where traction can be unpredictable. They can help you navigate challenging terrain, like rocks, mud, or sand.  

Types of diff locks:

  • Manual: These require a driver to engage or disengage them manually, often using a switch or lever.
  • Automatic: These engage automatically when one wheel begins to spin faster than the other, providing a more hands-off approach.

When to use a diff lock:

  • Off-roading: When driving on rough, uneven terrain.  
  • Low-traction conditions: When one or more wheels are losing traction.

Important note: Diff locks should generally be avoided on paved roads, as they can make turning more difficult and increase tire wear.
