A Panhard rod is a suspension link that stops a solid axle from moving too much left and right under the vehicle.
In simple words:
It keeps the axle centred sideways while still allowing it to move up and down.
On vehicles like a Defender, the axle is not fixed directly to the chassis. It moves with the suspension. The Panhard rod connects:
chassis/body side → axle side
So when you turn, brake, hit bumps, or articulate off-road, it controls the axle’s side-to-side movement.
Common signs of worn Panhard rod bushes:
- Steering feels loose or wandering
- Clunk when turning or braking
- Vehicle feels unstable over bumps
- Front axle seems to shift slightly
- Death wobble / steering shake in bad cases
For a Defender, the front Panhard rod is quite important because it affects steering feel directly. If the bushes are worn, the car can feel like it is “floating” or not tracking straight.
