Different Types of Nationalism

Nationalism can take different forms depending on the context:

1. Independence Nationalism

Want to create their own country or break away from another country.
Examples:

• Scottish nationalists

• Catalan nationalists

• Irish nationalists (historically)

2. Civic Nationalism

Focuses on shared citizenship and values, not ethnicity.
Example:

• “We are one nation because we share laws and civic ideals.”

3. Ethnic Nationalism

Focuses on shared ancestry, culture, or ethnic group.

4. Anti-colonial Nationalism

Opposing colonial powers and wanting independence.
Examples:

• India from Britain
