A nationalist is someone who strongly identifies with their nation and believes that their nation should have self-determination, control over its own government, and protection of its culture, land, and identity.

Core Ideas of Nationalism

A nationalist typically believes in:

1. National Identity

Their nation has a unique:

  • Culture

  • Language

  • History

  • Traditions
    …that should be protected and preserved.

2. Self-Rule

A nation should:

  • Govern itself

  • Make its own laws

  • Control its own territory
    Often this means opposing foreign rule or outside interference.

3. Unity Within the Nation

People of the nation should stick together and have shared loyalty.

 

Different Types of Nationalism

Nationalism can take different forms depending on the context:

1. Independence Nationalism

Want to create their own country or break away from another country.
