Hortobágy National Park is the largest semi-natural grassland area in Europe, located on the Great Hungarian Plain in Eastern Hungary.
It was established as a national park in 1972 (or 1973 depending on the source) and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 as “Hortobágy National Park – the Puszta”.
The park preserves traditional pastoral landscapes — marshes, loess ridges, alkaline grasslands — and showcases the historic interaction between people and nature in this region.
Visitors can explore herds of Hungarian grey cattle, wild horses, bird-rich wetlands, learn about shepherd traditions, and enjoy wide-open plains, making it a unique natural and cultural destination.
